How would you feel if you knew that volunteers cringed when they saw the church phone number come up on caller ID?  Think about that. They see the church number on caller ID and they know the church is clearly asking them to do something. Do you remember Pavlov’s dogs? The bell rings and the mouths of the dogs salivated. The phone rings, it’s the church, prepare to be asked to do something. Sadly, we have conditioned our people.

In order to reset this conditioned response, we need to begin to reset the pattern. What if we called to bless, encourage, and pray for them. We can’t only be known for extracting things from them. We must be known for pouring things into them.

Call one volunteer today. Ask for nothing. Give and don’t just take. We need to call volunteers and ask nothing of them. We need to call them to bless them, pray with them and that’s it.

I want to make a bold prediction about the future of ministry in America. I had someone recently ask me to make a prediction about how ministry will trend in the next 12 months. Here is my prediction: Volunteer Leadership Will Be Hard Next Year in Ministry.  I predict and I believe that we will continue to experience volunteer challenges for the rest of our lives, not just the next 12 months.

Jesus boldly said, “The harvest is plentiful and the workers are few”. You can take that to the bank. Listen, if Jesus said it, you can count on it. I like to call it “God’s Math”. According to our own math, we will never have enough workers to harvest those fields. However, I work from “God’s Math”, not my own math.

News flash, there is absolutely nothing that will eliminate all of your volunteer problems, ever. Period. Amen. Nothing. But Jesus does add, “The harvest is plentiful and the workers are few. Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest that He might raise up workers”.

Volunteer leadership is hard. Without question, the number one challenge for those in ministry is volunteers. As I travel all over the country, I hear the stories of pain as it relates to volunteers all the time. I have sat with leaders who are just tired.

Here it is: No matter what, Sunday is ALWAYS coming.  If you have an event on Friday night…Sunday is still coming.  If you hold a week-long outreach to the community, Sunday is still coming.  Every 7-days we need to have roles to fill.  It never ends.

Have you ever recruited someone out of desperation? You are massively behind and there are some pretty big holes.  Here is the worst part.  The people you do have serving are carrying a greater load because you are short staffed.

This leads to an unrealistic load for those who have said yes. Before long, you are running the risk of losing them. If this happens, you are doubly doomed.

Now you are desperate. Yet you know, when you recruit out of desperation, you are taking an even MORE dangerous path. The reality of being SO understaffed sets in and you resort to finding a warm body.

Leading volunteers is filled with pressure. But the pressure is not what most people would think.  It’s not the pressure the volunteers put on you. It’s that this role requires THIS MANY volunteers. You begin to wonder “Is this even worth it?”

If you have been in this role for any length of time, you have asked that question. You have asked yourself if it is worth this cost.  It may be 11:42pm and you are the last dog standing. You are alone picking up pieces of leftover popcorn from the event you led.

Sometimes you feel alone and just are exhausted. You have that question arise again. Is this worth it?  First, let me say this directly to you.  YOU ARE NORMAL.  This is not abnormal.
